Each two-page lesson focuses on a letter of the alphabet and an expressIon or dialogue, and uses songs and chants by Carolyn Graham. Classroom interaction in English is encouraged from the very beginning through a focus on question and answer forms, pairwork, and communicative games.
The Starter level consists of a Student Book, an interleaved Teacher's Book. a Workbook. and a Cassette. About the Author
Carolyn Graham is the creator of Jazz Chants, which connect the rhythm of spoken American English to the beatof jazz. She developed the technique of jazz chanting during her twenty-five years of teaching ESL in the American Language Institute of New York University. Ms. Graham is the author of numerous Jazz Chants books, all published by Oxford University Press. Ritsuko Nakata gained her BA from the University of California in Los Angeles. She has been involved in ELT for over 30 years, and is currently President of IIEEC, Teacher Training Center for English Teachers of Children, and President of AETC, The Association of English Teachers, based in Japan.

(QĐND) Cuối năm 1970, Tàu 176 nhận lệnh chở người và vũ khí vào chi viện cho chiến trường miền Nam. Đã hơn 40 năm sau chuyến đi ấy, nhưng ký ức về trận chiến đấu trên biển cùng đồng đội Tàu 176 giữa vòng vây quân thù vẫn in đậm trong tâm trí của Trung tá CCB Vũ Hữu Suông ở thôn Yên Đông, xã Yên Hải (Yên Hưng, Quảng Ninh).
Những ngày cuối năm 1970, Tàu 176 nhận được lệnh xuất phát chở người và vũ khí vào Bến Tre chi viện cho chiến trường miền Nam ruột thịt. Ban chỉ huy tàu có 5 người, gồm: Thuyền trưởng Lê Xuân Ngọc, Chính trị viên Trần Văn Chung, 3 thuyền phó là Vũ Hữu Suông, Nguyễn Quốc và Phạm Thả. Tàu hành trình được hai ngày thì trời bỗng nhiên trở gió, biển động rất mạnh. Một cơn bão bất ngờ ập tới. Con tàu nhỏ nhoi phải gồng mình chống chọi với cơn cuồng phong của biển cả. Từng đợt sóng lừng lững như dãy núi ầm ầm xô đến như muốn nuốt chửng và nhấn chìm Tàu 176 xuống biển sâu.
Hai ngày liền con tàu phải vật lộn với cơn bão, khi đã ra được vùng an toàn, chưa kịp mừng vì thoát khỏi cơn bão dữ, Tàu 176 lại phải đối mặt với mối hiểm nguy khác từ kẻ địch. Bão đã đánh dạt con tàu vào vùng biển mà địch đang tổ chức tuần tra, ngăn chặn rất gắt gao. Vào một buổi chiều, đài quan sát của địch ở trên mặt biển phát hiện ra tàu lạ, chúng liền cho máy bay trực thăng bám theo. Máy bay địch bay rất thấp để nhận dạng con tàu có nước sơn nâu sẫm và dòng chữ số hiệu màu trắng “VK1270” trên nền biển màu xanh. Tàu 176 vẫn bình tĩnh, thản nhiên hành trình. Khi trời vừa nhá nhem tối, thêm một chiếc Nany của Hải quân Mỹ nữa bay đến theo sát Tàu 176. Bằng kinh nghiệm của mình, chỉ huy tàu phán đoán là địch chuẩn bị thay ca nên sẽ mất cảnh giác. Thời cơ thuận lợi để thực hiện chiêu “xuất quỷ, nhập thần” đã đến. Chỉ huy tàu lập tức lệnh cho đội thủy thủ trong khoang mang theo chổi và sơn đặc biệt, bí mật rời tàu, nhào xuống nước, vung chổi sơn một cách điêu luyện và nhanh nhẹn không khác gì những tay thợ sơn chuyên nghiệp. Chỉ trong chốc lát con tàu đã được khoác lên mình một màu áo mới. Thực hiện xong việc “thay hình, đổi dạng”, Tàu 176 mở hết tốc lực, bật hết đèn hành trình, đàng hoàng tiến về phía trước, nơi có nhiều tàu đánh cá đang hoạt động để trà trộn và đánh lừa địch.
Sau một tuần lễ lênh đênh trên biển khơi, vượt qua bão tố và phòng tuyến kiểm soát gắt gao của kẻ thù, khi đã xác định được hướng vào Bến Tre đúng thời gian thì Tàu 176 bị máy bay trinh sát cùng hai tàu khu trục của Mỹ phát hiện. Chúng chạy kèm hai bên rất sát. Tàu 176 đi đến đâu thì chúng theo đến đấy. Mặc cho địch phát loa hăm dọa, lợi dụng cơn bão vừa nổi lên, Tàu 176 báo cáo sở chỉ huy và cắt sóng tiến vào bờ bằng đường ngắn nhất. Cách bờ vài chục hải lý thì Tàu 176 bất ngờ bị 12 tàu địch lao đến bao vây, nổ súng xối xả. Một thủy thủ hy sinh, Thuyền trưởng Ngọc bị thương vào chân. Được lệnh chiến đấu, Thuyền phó phụ trách hỏa lực Vũ Hữu Suông liền cho mở tung áo lưới ngụy trang, chọn chiếc tàu địch gần nhất rồi nổ súng. Ngay từ loạt đạn đầu, một tàu địch bốc cháy. Trước sự giáng trả quyết liệt, tàu của địch buộc phải giãn ra xa và dùng pháo câu vào. Tàu 176 vừa cơ động vừa tránh đạn địch, Thuyền trưởng Ngọc bị thương lần hai vào chân, Chính trị viên Chung bị thương vào mắt, còn Thuyền phó Suông thì bị thương vào bàn tay, hai thủy thủ nữa anh dũng hy sinh. Ban chỉ huy tàu quyết định cho tàu chạy dọc gần bờ, thả phao cho các thủy thủ và cán bộ được cử vào Nam chi viện, mang theo vũ khí quan trọng nhất rời tàu bơi vào bờ, đồng thời sẵn sàng phương án hủy tàu để giữ bí mật con đường vận chuyển chiến lược.
Khi anh em đã xuống nước bơi vào bờ, thì con tàu chạy theo một hướng khác để vừa đánh lạc hướng địch, vừa tổ chức gài thuốc nổ trong khoang. Gài thuốc nổ xong, những thủy thủ cuối cùng cũng bí mật rời tàu. Thấy con tàu vẫn nổ máy, đèn sáng nhưng không có tiếng súng đáp trả, địch tưởng thủy thủ trên tàu đã hy sinh hết, hoặc đã chịu quy hàng, liền hí hửng tiến đến, định áp sát để bắt giữ thì Tàu 176 như một khối bom khổng lồ bất ngờ phát nổ, đánh chìm luôn một tàu địch
Sau khi rời con tàu thân yêu, Thuyền phó Suông bị kẹt lại trong miền Nam. Trong quãng thời gian này, ông tiếp tục công tác và chiến đấu ở Cơ quan tác huấn Quân khu 8. Cuối năm 1974, ông được lệnh quay ra Bắc. Bốn năm sau chuyến đi gian khổ nhưng chiến đấu vô cùng kiên cường cùng đồng đội Tàu 176, Thuyền phó Suông được về phép thăm gia đình đúng vào ngày 26 Tết Âm lịch năm 1974. Trong không khí xuân ấm áp, niềm vui và nỗi xúc động trào dâng khi Thuyền phó Suông găp lại người vợ thân yêu cùng đứa con gái đầu lòng mà lúc lên đường ra đi ông chưa kịp nhìn mặt…
